FMC Receives Business Friend of the Environment Award

In July 2007, the Flambeau Mining Company received the prestigious Wisconsin Business Friend of the Environment Award from Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce. The award is annually bestowed on nine Wisconsin companies that play a vital role in protecting the environment.

Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin presents Jana Murphy of Flambeau Mining Company with a 2007 WMC Business Friend of the Environment Award for the company's outstanding environmental stewardship.

"We appreciate this recognition from WMC and are proud to have been honored for our efforts," said Jana Murphy, manager of environmental and reclamation services for Flambeau Mining Company. "We have made great strides in enhancing the site to provide a great environmental and recreational experience for our visitors, while maintaining our long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship. It is nice to have that effort recognized."

Business Friend of the Environment Award winners are categorized according to number of employees and judged in the areas of pollution prevention, environmental innovation and environmental stewardship. The Flambeau Mining Company won the small company honor for Environmental Stewardship. The Greater Ladysmith Area Chamber of Commerce nominated the company for the award. Other 2007 award winners including Kohler Company, Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Bell Laboratories, Louisiana Pacific Corporation, Weather Shield Manufacturing Inc. and others.

“These companies have set the standard for good environmental citizenship in Wisconsin ,” said Scott Manley, director of the WMC's Wisconsin Environmental Working Group®

The winners were chosen from a competitive field of 41 candidates. An independent panel of judges including an environmental regulator, and representatives from industry, environmental groups, and the University of Wisconsin System selected the winners. For more information on the awards, visit www.wmc.org.

In addition to this award, Flambeau won the first ever Hardrock Mineral Environmental Award sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in 2003 for Community Outreach and Economic Security for outstanding achievement in sustainable development and the mine's concerns shown for community responsibilities. Flambeau also became the first recipient of the 2007 Green Award presented by the Greater Ladysmith Area Chamber of Commerce in recognition for its commitment to environmental stewardship.
